First Year
By Jess

Clip to ScrapBook
I had the same problem. I did my student teaching in a first grade classroom expecting the teacher to help me grow as a teacher. I went into that classroom with only the knowledge that was given to me from attending teacher
education classes and pre-student teaching. I had some ideas how to run a classroom but not where one would think I was the queen of teaching. Instead of giving me suggestions or meeting with me to tell me what she thought was working and what was not working, she simply wrote a long letter of complaints and left the letter on my desk. She also talked behind my back to the other teachers.
Finally I confronted her and told her she had to talk to me about these issues so I could grow as a teacher. After that simple talk we started working as a team and things began to change. She started helping me grow as a teacher. This will be my third year teaching first grade. Today I receive so many compliments about how I teach from other teachers, the principal, parents, and the students. Good luck and hang in there! It will all be worth it soon.
