writing

Clip to ScrapBook
I use OREO when teaching writing to persuade (Opinion, Reason, Explanation to support reason, Opinion restated). I tie it to the cookie when I introduce it, reminding the kids that the good stuff is found in the middle.
To reinforce the next lesson, I use the mini cookies for each reason/explanation combination that works in the essay. Our district uses an A.C.E. strategy (Answer the Question, Connect to the text, and Extension) when responding to text. We also introduced power writing at the end of this year. The kids caught on quickly and it worked so well with the 5th graders that I will be using
all year this year. Basically, a #1 is a topic sentence, #2 is a major detail, #3 is a supporting detail, and #4 is a concluding statement. We give the kids number sequences that become progressively difficult -- 1,2,3,4 to 1,2,3,3,2,3,3,4 etc. The Power Writing posters were hanging in my room for the kids to refer to when writing in all content areas. Hope this helps. Lori
