higher level students
By Cathy-Dee

Clip to ScrapBook
I usually have at least 1 student a year like this in my grade 1 class and sometimes 2 or 3. Last year I had two enter grade 1 reading and comprehending at a grade 3 level.

There are many ways to challenge these students
without having to create a lot of extra projects and work for yourself

- simple novel studies
- if you use a workbook series in phonics - getting the next grade level for these students to work in
- if you do reading buddies with an older grade ensuring that student is partnered with one of the better readers in the older grade to offer them challenging reading during those times.
-

having them do extra projects on the computer
- having them write a simple book report on an animal - one teacher I student-taught under had a format set out for the students
What is the name of the animal?

Where is the animal found in the world?

What does it eat?

List three interesting facts you learned bout the animal?

So it's more reading and answering questions but can be read to the class as a report.

- higher expectations with writing - in journals expect 2 pages of writing instead of 1 each day.

- I also have purchased over time many resource books including ones with comprehension reading and questions, advanced phonics, spelling, etc., for grades 1 to 3. I make up extra workbooks for all my students based on their reading levels and needs. These are used whenever they finish other work, so for my top group there are reading comprehension sheets at their reading level to do.

- literacy centers where they can do work at their level

The nice thing about grades 1 and 2 is you often do not have to work hard to keep these children motivated because they already are motivated. It's more a matter of having things for them to do so that you challenge their learning rather than let them just coast along.

I also think it is very important especially in grade 1 to not push them too hard either. Often you'll find parents who want more and more work for them to do. I rarely send home work for these students and instead suggest ways for the parents to do other types of enrichment activities at home. And in school I feel although it is good to challenge them, it is also fine to let them work with their peers too. When we do too much enrichment and push them too hard to achieve more and more they become frustrated and unhappy with the pressure too.
