I teach 4th grade and am probably in a different state, so our required # of minutes may be different. First of all, I teach math for 1 hour each day. They have 50 min. of social studies and science 4 days a week. Other than lunch, recess, art, music, phys. ed., and library (technically a "lang. arts" time), the rest of my time is spent doing reading/language. This is all of my reading instruction, silent reading, read aloud, writing, spelling, grammar, skills review for proficiency testing, etc. As far as breaks, my students usually need a restroom and drink break about 1 hour into the school day. | | If we haven't left the room at all, I'll usually let them get a quick drink after another hour and a half, and use the restroom if needed. I try to give my kids the chance to use the restroom on the way to or from special classes, on the way to lunch, from recess, and before and after school. That way, they should need to use the restroom infrequently during class. I know that they sometimes want to go just to get out of class or for a change of scenery. That's human nature, so sometimes that's ok. By the way, my schedule this year doesn't allow me to have any real choice about what I teach when, but I usually like to teach my students either math or lang. arts first thing in the morning. Math seems to wake them up. Social studies, science...they have those in the afternoon. This year I have the exact opposite, but am hoping to make this work too. Hope this helps!
