4-blocks for Sixth
By teachem

Clip to ScrapBook
Here is my set-up (which changed last year as we began taking a 4-blocks approach at our school):

We read a novel together each grading period. This allows me to work on more individual assessments and such while everyone
else is
together.
We now have AR, which I am modifying this year to go back to my old method for SSR. My students must read 3 chapter books independently each quarter and write a report on one and do a project/two paragraph summary for another.
My sixth-graders still like centers (but don't overdo it, they'll complain if you do not mix things up occasionaly) but you must
have structure for the centers to operate effectively.

Check out Cheryl Sigmon's website for ideas on modifying 4-blocks for upper grades. Laura Candler also has a site that I have used. It is worth a look to get some good ideas!

Good luck with your program and with your class. This age is so great to work with because they have you pulling your hair out one day and hugging them the next. Be CONSISTENT in whatever you choose to do.
