non-english-speaking Parents
By Julianne

Clip to ScrapBook
About 3/4 of my students speak a language other than English. And their parents generally have less English than the children. While I'm picking up a rudimentary ability to converse with my Spanish speaking parents, there's no way I can communicate with the parents of students who speak other languages. Last year we had Vietnamese, Russian, Tibetan and Bosnian in addition to Spanish! We draw on community resources and district personnel to communicate really important information to parents, such as at parent/teacher conferences. But does anyone have some suggestions for involving these parents more in the day to day aspects of our classroom?
