AR Incentives By JoDee

Our media specialist came up with a dog tag program. When kids passed their first test and started earning points they were given a long chain and their first dog tag. This in itself got kids fired up to read. Then every| two weeks she had update day and kids that had 10 points or more could earn additional dog tags. I'm not exactly sure what her formula for passing out the tags was but I'd be more than happy to find out in Aug. when we return to school. Additionally, she kept up with total numbers of points and had kids "swimming" in different schools of fish depending on their total numbers. At the | | end of the school year those students who had prescribed numbers or goals reached won an Ice Cream Party. The Goal Setting Activity was over a specific period of time and those students who earned their goal became part of a drawing for a day at the local water park.I wish that I could be more specific, but as a classroom teacher I just witnessed how much my kids were reading. They really loved the dog tags the most. You can get other ideas about AR, incentives, tests, etc. at www.lauracandler.com - She has a file cabinet with AR ideas. Good luck.
