L.A. Unified
By Amanda K

Clip to ScrapBook
I have never worked for L.A. Unified although I used to live in L.A., but I would imagine that they don't have enough subs... I don't know of a district in this area that has enough subs, even my district, and we are noted
for having good kids and good schools. Plus, LA Unified is so large and I know that they are the district in this state that has been hit the hardest by teacher shortages... districts in this position tend to fill vacancies with the subs who are qualified to teach full time. Subs are so difficult to obtain that many districts are requiring only senior standing at a college and the CBEST,
not an actual diploma.

Good subs are hard to find. During an interview, I would make it clear to them that you are there to teach, not just baby-sit. The big frustration on the part of teachers about subs is that occasionally you get a sub who does not follow your lesson plans and does who knows what all day. (I'm sure that's no one on this message board, because if you didn't care, you wouldn't be here!) Subs who follow the lesson plans and do a good job teaching are valued as gold. I'd mention that in your interview... it's a huge plus.
