Basals
By Julie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi, Melissa! Not sure which series your school has for reading, but we use Scholastic's Literacy Place. Our school also requires use of our basal series. So, this past year I incorporated the weekly story into a "center".
I was also able to use the weekly stories as a springboard for pulling in other picture books or short stories in, so students could compare styles, look for the concepts being studied, genre, etc. I was fortunate enough to have a title teacher in my room for 30 min. during reading and she would go over the concept that went with the story and sometimes she would read to them, sometimes
them alone, together, etc. (Not that you would have to have another person to do it, it just gave me an opportunity to meet with another group!) I would also incorporate the language/concepts into my mini-lessons, depending on how much of the concept the students needed. I'm anxious to see what other suggestions are posted!
