I tutor in the northern VA area- in the suburbs of DC. I charge $45 for one hour. I know companies that charge $75 though. I plan to raise my rates next year to $50. It;s nice money though especially during the summer where I am tutoring 5 kids twice a week.
I also travel to their homes. All of the kids I tutor are from the school I teach at. It's really word of mouth. Our school has a tutoring list that parents can get from the office. I've been there 4 years and parents kind of pass my name along to other parents.
I would be careful about putting ads out in papers because the IRS could always track you down. Unless of course you are claiming the money, then you are good to go.
