I teach 2nd grade. Go over all your procedures and routines. The class must be functionable or learning will not take place. Here's what I do on the first day and the first couple of weeks. I start out by having a welcome
packet waiting at their desk. It is important to have the students get to work as soon as they come in so you can discuss transportation and other important issues with their parents. Also, I give my students a seek-n-find that is about my favorite things. This is a great way for them to get to know me. I take the students on a tour of the building and tell them how and where to
line up for when we leave the room. I go over the rules & procedures for everthing. We play games with this so that it is not boring. I make sure I have their transportation down pat!!!! That is a main priority. For the first two weeks we review the rules, consequences, routines, & procedures. If the students know what is expected of them they will be able to function better. The first week the students will be assigned to bring a "Me Bag" to school telling about themselves. They put things in this bag that describes their hobbies, interests, etc. I hope this isn't overwhelming. The main thing is to make your classroom a fun, exciting, and structured classroom. I would suggest keeping a record or folder of the things that you do on the first day so you can look at it next year. That's right it is never too early to think of next year! I forget from year to year what type of activities I did with my students. Good luck to you.
