first grade

Rules and procedures for everything!!! However the students are really anxious to do some sort of "work". You can incorporate the way things are to be done by doing them rather than lecture. Plan to do some kind of writing
or coloring activity the first day. That will make them very happy. Try to get in cutting and pasting, too the first few days. They just love to get to use their new supplies. Things tend to go s...l...o....w....l...y. with first graders. You never get finished what you plan but thats okay because you have the rest of the school year to do it. I have been teaching first grade for
a long timeand I still have a hard time starting in Sept.and stopping in June. Be sure you know how they are getting home bus or car or walking and bus numbers. That's the very first thing I take care of. So if they don't know then the office can find out in plenty of time.

Plan easy activities for the afternoons. (A story, educational video, a class game, sing). They tend to get very tired even if they have attended all day Kindergarten(they napped in the p.m). Get ready to for dismissal very early so you have enough time packing up and getting the students where they need to be at the end of the day.

Also, try visiting the First Grade board that's where all the great ideas for your level are.
