Wendy, When I do bullentin boards for some of the same topics you mentioned, I have found it helpful to make a large title that says' Social Studies' and then a smaller title with ' Rome' etc on it. I also make large copies of vocabulary words--large font, colored paper, crazy scissors with background paper.
I refer to the words as we discuss the unit, or assign them as homework. Because these boards are curriculum based, my titles are plain. Doesn't really answer your question, but the vocab words do really help.
