Banking By Julie

Michelle,First, I started by asking one of the local banks to donate checkbook covers and registers. Then we created a check and our copy center created little checkbooks with cardboard on the back to help keep them in | the checkbook covers. I had a checklist and each morning I would check their agendas (homework/assignment books) to see if everything was done. If it was, I'd check it off. If not, we'd put a circle by their name. On Friday mornings, during math center time, students would tally up how much they owed (if they had circles, desk rent, etc.). They would also tally up the amount they | | should receive for a paycheck. They would have to verify their amounts with two other peers before writing or receiving a check. Then they would put their totals on the checklist (either negative or positive) and I would cut them a check, if needed. The kids really loved having a banking system and "purchasing" coupons. I had coupons for pencils, erasers, lunch with me, homework passes, etc. Once in a while we'll have a silent auction too. I'll make "grab bags" and set around the table. Students bid on a bag, highest bidder gets the bag. Hope something here helps!
