    4th graders

I remember feeling the same way, not so very long ago. After seven years with 4th graders, I've learned some things, and am convinced that 4th grade is a wonderful age to work with kids.
Here's what I can tell you...
    1) They are wonderfully independent in that most of them will be able to read and write. They will need lots of help to develop their skills and to learn to love doing these things.
    2) They still want to please their teacher (most of them)
    3) They like to be treated like they are growing up. They're not little kids anymore, you'd better believe it. And yet they still respond to candy, stickers, and things like "the first table I see where everyone is being quiet will be the first to line up."
    4) They will definitely test you. You have to be firm with your rules. I'm rethinking things myself for the coming year, because I was not satisfied with my management last year. I'm very laid back and flexible, and they're starting to take advantage. Don't be mean, but be firm.
    5) They have a definite sense of right and wrong. They want to know why things happen as they do and if they can trust you. If you say you will do something at a certain time, do it. They will call you on anything they perceive to be inconsistant or a mistake. Be prepared to back up your actions.
    6) Have a sense of fun and humor in the classroom and remember that they are kids, really only about 10 years old. They like to be silly. They think they're older than they really are. Help them to see the fun and wonder in the world. Challenge them and expect great things. You will be amazed at what they are capable of.
