What about Summer Reading is Killing Me by Jon Scieszka (author of The Stinky Cheese Man and others) from the Time Warp Trio? It's about 3 boys who have traveled through time and are stuck in a story where lots of characters (heros and villans) from their summer reading list are running around. It's a good one and a very quick read. It might help to read the first one in the series first, The Knights of the Kitchen Table. My students love them.
