Erica, I know what you mean about the coloring pages being too cumbersome. I usually carry season-appropriate color page masters because some schools will copy them for you if you ask first thing in the morning. Sounds like you are very organized. Since this was my first year, I will strive to be more organized in the future. I also carry an age appropriate video or two each day, usually Arthur the Aardvark, since I'm usually in grades K - 3. A couple of elementary teachers suggested this at their school since their students loved Arthur. They have come in handy a couple of times when the planned video wasn't available for me to use -was being used by another teacher in the building. I also carry the standard band-aids, plastic gloves, stapler, scotch tape, and other office supplies as suggested by the Substitute Teacher Institute website. During National Teachers Week, I copied some Jan Brett color pages ("Thank you for teaching" - really cute artwork, of course) for the students to color and sign for their teachers. These pages were also useful as additional incentive for the students to complete their classwork correctly in order to work on their "teacher" sheet. The Jan Brett website also has several alphabet sheets you can download for handwriting lessons. I usually carry a few master copies with me because once the teacher forgot to leave the handwriting lesson copies. Had to resort to a quick creation that time!
