current events projects
By Allison Woods

Clip to ScrapBook
Current events always spark the interests of G/T students. We talk about a few current events and zero in on one that sparks the most interest. The students listen to the news, get on the internet and read the newpaper.
(This is mostly done at home, but can be done at school, also.) Soon newspaper clippings, internet research, etc. are brought to school. The kids will greet you in the morning with-"did you see the news last night..

I especially like this "current events project" because the students direct it and it takes off in what ever the direction each student finds of interest. You can intergrate

math, science, social studies and language arts with the event. Finally, parents love that their kids are interested in the news, and love to see their kids expand on thoughts taken from the event!

We followed the prisoners in Cuba at Camp X-ray. We also kept up with The Artic Wildlife Refuge Debate. For summer school, we have been following the fires in Colorado and Arizona. All current events lend themselves easily to Dr. Sandra Kaplan's elements of depth and complexity: language of the experts, point of view, change over time, the big idea, details, trends, unanswered questions, etc. (4th grade,TX)
