Personally, most of my read alouds are all picture or short stories, and yes, I do teach intermediate. The kids are reading, discussing and writing about chapter books during Reader's Workshop. The reason I do this is to maximize the number of great books they've been exposed to as well as giving springboards for LOTS of interactive read alouds for reading and writing strategies. The books depend upon the genre, author, and interests of the kids. Best of luck whatever you decide. ;-D
