comprehension
By Susan

Clip to ScrapBook
Laura, something that really seems to work with my students is learning to become an "active" reader. Before you read a book, look at the title - make predications about what it'll be about. Read the back of the book - what is the short summary about? Look at the chapter titles - what should I expect about each chapter? Then start reading with them. After a paragraph or so, ask them questions. Did your prediction come true? What will happen next? This keeps their mind focused on the story and looking for answers as they go along, which helps them comprehend it at the end.
