In Michigan a child placed in the resource room needs less than 1/2 days support from the resource teacher. The children in self-contained need more than 1/2 days support from the self-contained teacher. Resource is less restrictive than self-contained. Sutdents in self-contained often have multiple needs i.e. speech, social work, ot or pt as well as learning difficulties. Also there is a difference in the number of students that can be on your case load. More for resource less for self-contained. I personally like self-contained better than resource. I like having the kids for a longer period of time...seems more like a classroom than a support.
