Basals
By Sara

Clip to ScrapBook
We are getting the McMillan McGraw Hill reading series next year. It has a "basal" as well as trade books that relate to the story for the week in the basal. I have love/hate feelings toward basals. They are good b/c they
teach the reading skills that need to be taught, and newer versions are much better about being interesting to students and visually exciting than older series. They are bad b/c they don't give students the skills to use in the "real world" of reading. I also use novels with my basal b/c they can learn skils, then apply those skills in real-life reading situations. Face it, adults
don't read from basals, we read from novels and must apply all we learned about comprehension, predicting, summarizing, etc. to novel reading. I would advise using basals, but getting in one or two novels a year to practice all the skills you've learned from the basals.
Don't know if this helped any, just my opinion.
