Red Scarf Girl
By Margaret

Clip to ScrapBook
One book I read for my college studies for Young Adult historical fiction was Red Scarf Girl by Ji Li Jiang. It is a wonderfully written book about a 12 year girl living during the Cultural Revolution in China. I'm not
sure what age group you have but it seems to fit in the 7th grade and above year level. I teach fourth grade, so it's not suitable for my level, but I can't wait to teach junior high (my first choice) because of what this book can teach them about a subject that may not be first in their minds. It really makes the reader identify with this time-frame that seems to be overlooked in the
history books. The book is actually the author's memoirs of this time. It is a remarkable book, and I can't wait to get a chance to teach it! Not sure if this is much help, but if you have an older group of students, I think this book would really help with teaching about the affect of the Cultural Revoultion on the Chinese people. Being a Social Studies and Language Arts focused person, I can't seem to make a connection with science but maybe there can be. At any rate, you should read this book. It was eye-opening to me-- and still is!
