You may want to start with the basic primary colors & shapes (circle, square, triangle), then move up to secondary colors & shapes (rectangle, oval, diamond). Sounds like he'll be working with you receptively (pointing) rather than expressively (verbally) at first. Do lots of reading, use lots of simple language. Talk about the pictures, talk about the stories, act out the stories with toys, etc. Give him lots of processing time, he may need it. I certainly hope the child is going into some sort of special schooling program so that he can get the help that he needs. Has the mom contacted her local school district? Is she aware that the local schools must provide services for "special need" children from age 3? It's the law!
