SFA Homework incentives
By KIm

Clip to ScrapBook
In my school, we have monthly Pride events. These can be a trip to a neighborhood skating rink, the swimming pool or a special assembly. Kids get to go to these events based on three things, no discipline referrals for the
month, no more than 3 missed homework assignments, (nightly reading and homeroom count toward this), and no more than 3 tardies in the month. We have adopted a monthly calendar where parents sign to affirm their child has read for at least 20 minutes. These calendars are checked every day by both the homeroom and the reading teacher.
We have also had our facilitator come around on
surprise days and give a small candy to everyone who read the previous night.
Other things that have helped are having a morning and afternoon book club where kids can read silently and have their calendar signed by a staff member. Also, we made a commitment to parents that we would keep homework to 1 hour a night or less, and that includes the 20 minutes of reading.
All this has helped us get our Read & Respond percentage returned at the 80 - 85% mark. It's been 4 years in the making though and a lot of hard work. Hope that helps a bit!
