Upper Grade ideas
By Crystal

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach fifth grade and have students at 4th, 5th and 6th grade reading levels. Some of these ideas vary depending on how independent they are. My school has basal readers which are short stipends of novels or other stories.

Read Naturally-- This program helps students with their fluency. I received most of my info. from my schools Title One Reading teacher.

Accelerated Reader-- This helps greatly with students reading on a daily basis.

Literature Circles-- This usually works with my students at 5th and 6th grade reading levels. It is a great way to get reading groups to discuss stories.

Story

on Tape-- I have recorded all the stories on tape and let students listen and follow along.

5W's -- I always stress the 5 W's when my students are reading- Who, What, Where, When, Why

In fifth grade you can do genre studies, litery element studies, novel studies, you focus on problem and solution, cause and effect, etc.

I hope this is a little helpful.
