Porfolio
By Helen

Clip to ScrapBook
We are required to send up a portfolio with our children but ours is not necessarily like some others. We have two state supplied sheets in ours, one a Math matrix for the grade level and the other a Language Arts summative
profile.
We mark the Math Matrix each nine weeks. It shows all of the goals and objectives required by the state (for that grade level). We mark it on the oeriod that we assess the skill. We enclose with the Matrix the summative assessment (ours is available online at learnnc.org/k-2 assessment).
The Language summative covers k-2 and has places to record in certain color ink,
scores on Running Records, Spelling and Writing, phonics etc. We include with it; a wrtiting sample from each semester, reading assessment scores twice a year, spelling/phonemic assessments twice a year.etc. It also has rubrics and scales on which to mark and date growth in Reading and Wrtiing. These are scored each year and passed up, along with the sheets that document what ever is recorded on the summative.
I personally like to see some like I have done in the past, where I allowed stdents to pick what they wanted in their portfolio. Once a week I sent home papers and before they went I let each child pick one reading and one math paper to save...plus I picked one. At the end og the nine week grading period I picked some and the child picked two and we sent the rest of those home...They child felt a part of the process and by letting me choose I was able to keep some in there for documentation of growth.
Portfolios are kept for various reasons. I have a friend who kept "showcase" portfolios where the child showed their best work only and used these at parent conferences, but let the child show the parents and walk them through the portfolio. The parents loved it and the children loved it because they could show-off but could also explain why their work was good or how it could be better.
Have I really confused you yet? LOL
