literacy centers!

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Kim,
I have taught for ten years and love running a cener based literacy program... Here are some of the centers my classes have enjoyed the most.
I put out a picture file..animals, trees, flowers,
buildings etc. The children have a large piece of paper with writing lines on the bottom and empty space at the top. On the lines they must first write a sentence about one of the picture cards. (two, three sentences later on, and can instruct the use of including adjectives as the year go on) After they have written, then using a box of watercolor paints they paint the picture at the
top of the page making it look as much like the picture on the card as they can.

A spelling activity that is enjoyed is to write each spelling word on a piece of chart paper. Using letters they find in magazines they cut and glue the letters to build each word on the chart paper next to the written word. As the groups rotate through this center they continue to spell out the words so that the chart paper becomes filled.

Rhyming words, contracions, compound words can all be practiced by writing them with permanent marker on the sides of the plastic snap together Easter Eggs. The children enjoy matching and putting the eggs together. I have a record sheet that after the eggs are matched the children write the words they made.

I hope these are helpful...have fun!
Anne
