    On the other hand...

Let me first preface by saying that I do not agree with fabricating any grades or files. This said, however, there are some administrators out there who push teachers to "fabricate" or "inflate" grades because THEY do not want to deal with the repercussions from parents...even when the failing grade can adequately be backed up. There are also teachers who are afraid of the parent confrontation because they do not have any back up from the adminstration...I know because I work in one of those schools. I can have it all in black and white AND have proven that I have gone above and beyond with a child and STILL the tendency is to give the parent what they want. While I stick to my guns, I can imagine that over time, dealing with this can get to someone. Perhaps that is why some teachers do these things. I'm not saying there aren't lazy people out there...there sure are and I can name a few...but I think that there is often more to the picture than that. Also, not all districts retain...my does not. I have a student who has an F average in all academic subjects and will still move on next year because of 'social promotion'. Not only that - but he'll tell you that he knows he won't be kept back if he does no work. And the joke of it is, is that we have a 6th/7th grade program called "Work Ethics"! Maybe we should practice what we preach!
