I teach first grade too. We have the students make "OK" signs with both hands. Then say the alphabet ... a,b,c,d. The left hand looks like a "b" when you put your last three fingers straight up, and the right hand looks like a "d" when you put your last fingers straight up. They will be in the correct order when you say the alphabet from left to right. I hope this helps.
