differentiated instruction

At our school we do this at each grade level, including kindergarten. Our kindergarten is a combined kindergarten where we departmentalize. By teaching this way it allows you more time to challenge students in all content
areas. The most effective way that I have been successful is through small group instruction and centers. For example, the writing center activity might have step by step directions on how to do an activity, but it would have pictures as well as words. The direction might be to write a sentence and illustrate a picture to go with it. Depending on the child's ability, you get varying
amounts of work. This method has been very successful for me this year, where I have most of my students reading, but at the beginning of the year these same students couldn't write or recognize their name. I am a big supporter of this method of instruction for kindergarten.
