You are more than welcome to disagree with me! ;-D I don't find diversity addressed adequately in four blocks. I believe guided groups should be done at each child's instructional level, not three days
at the class 'GL' (which could be higher or lower than average, depending on your group each year). And the groups should be changed often, based on continual assessment of each child. So that's my concern with Cunningham's model (and only as I've read about it). It tries to address the differing abilities in the classroom, but I don't think in the most efficient way. If you're having
success with it, that's the main thing and you seem to be doing everything you can to meet your students needs at this time. I can see how the struggle to find appropriate books might limit your choices during GR. Do you have the GR & W book? Another great one is 'Conversations' by R. Routman.
