The grouping for Shared/Guided Reading is, as Elaine explained, ever changing. As you continue to work with individuals and small groups, teaching for strategies, the groupings shift based on what you've just observed the children doing, so you could be changing the groups daily. But it all depends upon how you define 'ability grouping'. The assessments that are proposed in GR & W, GR, Conversations among others, are to use running records coupled with retellings in order to determine each child's independent, instructional and frustration levels plus strengths and next steps as a learner. The grouping ddd was referring to, is tracking. Does this help??? ;-D
