Hi again, Debbie!

I remember when you suggested the title and summary. I don't recall anyone who disagreed with your ideas or offered any other choices. Personally, I think your title and summary fit our purposes very
well, and I think sending the info directly to George is a great idea. Go for it! The link George posted on the Book Board is almost at the bottom of page 1 and will probably be pushed over to page 2 before the first of next week.

Reading GR & W is going fine! Implementing is another story. I am reading and planning for next fall when I get my new 4th graders. Frankly, I have gone

so far into an individualized reader's workshop approach with my 5th graders (who have been with me since 4th) that I feel it would be very difficult for me to pull my kids back into true guided reading groups. I do lots of instruction and modeling during our read aloud time, and (following your advice) I am definitely planning to integrate some guided reading in with social studies (and possibly science) before this school year is over.

About this time of year toward the end of my "loop," I start using my students as little pilot groups. I ask them to try some different things and give me feedback about what worked and didn't work for them. They always act like it's a pain to try something new just because I read an article or went to a workshop, but then again they feel flattered that they are helping me decide what to do when I get my new students. They are sooooooo funny and honest when they offer advice, and I really listen to what they say. Here's an interesting thought: Teaching is never about just teaching and it's never just about today. It's always about learning and tomorrow!!!!!!!!!

Have a great day, Debbie. I am home because we are in the middle of a major ice storm here in Missouri. They say there's snow on the way. I'm going to curl up with GR & W (not an easy task with that humongous text) and do some heavy duty reading!

Elaine
