controlled vocabulary By Vickie

Debbie, Thank you for raising an issue that has been nagging at me. What exactly does "controlled vocablulary mean?" My understanding is similar to yours: "controlled by phonemic elements." Under my understanding,| children's trade literature, while it may be leveled for difficulty, does not contain controlled vocabulary. However, there are those at my school who insist that our second-grade reader consists of controlled vocabulary texts. This two-volume reader is an anthology of well-known children's trade literature, with stories such as Henry and Mudge, Amelia Bedelia, and other well-known authors | | such as Carmen Lomas Garza and Eve Bunting, just to name a few. I don't consider trade literature to be controlled vocabulary. Do you? Am I way wrong?
