Hi Josie, You really can't get shifts in reading if the kids aren't reading at their level. Is there any way to 'borrow' some books at a lower grade level? Even the basals (as long as they didn't have the gl, or even an older set) would be a start. Also, magazine articles could be copied. I also get as many library books from the public library as I can, sometimes I use all the library cards in the house. Just DON'T let them out of the classroom, my latest bill was $20- for my latest overdue set!!! OUCH. On the reading instruction, if she won't change, perhaps you'll just have to tell her you're | | reading some great research based professional books and are going to try them out during class. You lead the minilesson then find something appropriate for them to read to practice their strategies. Make it something really motivating, and be sure to document the responses you get from the kids in your group. Then compare notes with her, conveying the excitement the kids felt as they were enjoying the book and bringing their own meanings to it. Also, is it out of the question to go over your reading specialist's head for help??? ;-D
