I feel for you.
By Elaine

Clip to ScrapBook
Josie,
I really feel for you. We all know literacy is soooooooooooo important, and when we feel we're not meeting the needs of our students, it's more than a bit frustrating. I'm sorry, I don't have an answer for you.

Do you sit down with the reading specialist to plan for the week together? If you don't, could you ask her to meet with you because you are concerned about your students reading skills/levels - whatever. Would she be willing to talk with you? Be very tactful when describing what is bothering you -- don't let it be the old world way she teaches -- make it be your concern over the

fact that your reading instruction comes for a text that is way to difficult for your students. Make your concern for the students your focus.

About dividing into smaller groups -- say 4 groups instead of 2 groups. Wasn't the old way to get students started on "seatwork" and then call that "Bluebird" reading group back for instruction? Maybe you could call the smaller grouping strategy a "back-the-old-days-basics" and she'd by into it. Tell her that since your students are so low and the text is so far above their reading levels that you think the situation calls for some changes.

No about not having a classroom library, please email me so we can talk about it.

Elaine
