I really feel for you. We all know literacy is soooooooooooo important, and when we feel we're not meeting the needs of our students, it's more than a bit frustrating. I'm sorry, I don't have an answer for you.
About dividing into smaller groups -- say 4 groups instead of 2 groups. Wasn't the old way to get students started on "seatwork" and then call that "Bluebird" reading group back for instruction? Maybe you could call the smaller grouping strategy a "back-the-old-days-basics" and she'd by into it. Tell her that since your students are so low and the text is so far above their reading levels that you think the situation calls for some changes. No about not having a classroom library, please email me so we can talk about it. Elaine
