These are all really great ideas. Thank you for your kind and quick responses. The reading specialist in my room, however, would not be apt to taking small groups and leaving others to be independent. How can I explain| it to her. SHe is VERY old world. She agrees in teaching the skills assigned by the text as a whole class, then having oral round robin reading in two groups. One for her and one for me. We all read the same text and each student learns the same skill at the same time. My school groups students homogeneously and I have one of the lowest classes. Therefore, we are using grade level | | materials to teach students who are reading one to two grade levels below. I really am frustrated. By the way...this is my first year teaching fourth grade in a public school. I taught 6th-8th grade for four years before that for four years. I've never had a self contained classroom before. I also have no classroom library. The books that are in my classroom are mine and are mostly geared for older readers due to my previous grades. I try to order books with Troll points, etc. but could still use some advice. I am so discouraged, but I don't mean to sound bitter. I just want to help these kids and don't feel like I am. What we're doing is not working for them.
