Integration is the key!
By Elaine

Clip to ScrapBook
I recently had my class read (and remember I am the totally-into-choice-for-my-kids teacher) A LION TO GUARD US when we were starting a study of the Colonies. We read the first 3 chapters together and stopped at the end
of each chapter to do that Stephanie Harvey strategy "making connections." We made a T-chart with these 2 headings: "What the text says" and "What it reminds me of." Then I had them team up with a buddy for one day to read more chapters, stopping to write on the T-chart after each. Finally, I had them finish the book solo using the same strategy. It went really well, and I felt good
about reading some historical fiction that was related to what we were studying in S.S. I totally agree about integrating reading and other content areas. I was talking to a buddy teacher today about GRW, we both agreed that we were going to use more historical fiction and nonfiction for the guided reading component. She's ahead of me in reading and implementing GR with her students. But I'm catching up -- thanks to all the good support from her, this wonderful board, and all you terrific teachers who come here to talk.
More soon,
Elaine
