Guiding Readers and Writers By Debbie

Hi all, Literature conversation books can be seen as a form of guided reading...I do allow my kids to choose the books they'd like to read, even if they're a bit 'out of level'. (The book Grand Conversations is wonderful| if you haven't read it yet!) I don't think this isn't what Fountas and Pinnell would suggest, but it works with the additional supports built into the LAB. When I'm doing a book talk on all the possible titles, I try to steer my children to make appropriate choices, but sometimes they are determined to read something quite challenging and I give them the option to buddy read, or share | | it with their parents so they have some additional supports for the reading part. For the additional reading they're doing independently, they are asked to read within their level, and for my children who are still needing help with specific strategies-I meet with them during LAB in small group or individually to work on those using books from the book room chosen specifically for their needs. On the homework issue, I reworked the book list that was published in GR & W to include a parent initials to sign off that they've supervised the reading...this is in the middle section of their homework folder which goes home on Monday and is to be returned on Friday. Can't wait to join the book talk board... ;-D
