Student teaching
By Debbie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Kate,
While it would be nice to think you could try some new things out during your student teaching experience, you're probably going to be mainly continuing what your cooperating teacher set up for Language Arts prior
to your coming. For a great start on scheduling your own Language Arts block, the book Guiding Readers and Writers LG 3-6 or Guided Reading for K-3 has great ideas for scheduling this all in. A sample LAB would be at least 2 1/2-3 hours with Reader's Workshop, Writer's Workshop and Word Study Block. Even if your campus does a block scheduling with subjects more splintered, you can
get around this by using books that pertain to Social Studies and Science content as a part of LAB then taking some of your SS / Sci time to add more reading / writing -especially in the form of non-fiction. I just saw a book chapter on LAB scheduling that was previewed at the International Reading Association book store site (www.ira.org/) If you'd like to see it and can't find it, post or email and I can dig it up again. It's great that you're willing to continue reading and growing. Best of luck and let us know how your student teaching is going. ;-D
