When the Doorbell Rang
By Lona

Clip to ScrapBook
First I read the story for pleasure, then I have the children return to their seats. I pass out manipulatives (12 to each person...maybe cookie cereal!) and have the students act of the story while I read it again. I then
have them pair up with a partner and ask questions such as: What if I had 24 cookies and had to share them with 6 people? etc. Then on the overhead (or chalkboard) I have a page broken down into columns.
# of cookies, # of people, # of cookies each person has, division problem.
We fill it in with various examples, and they work out each problem with their partner, with their manipulatives.
Finally
we write our own "When the Doorbell Rang" story. (I believe that I got the prompt from The Mailbox magazine, but I'm not sure) If you want to send me your address I can mail you a copy of this.
I hope this makes sense. It is a GREAT book to use for division!
