Math facts
By Debbie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi ddd,
I think one of the biggest problems with learning math facts, is the lack of time given to really developing the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division thru authentic or realistic problem
solving. Instead of starting with creating meaning, we begin with 'basic facts'...it's part to whole (just like starting with synthetic phonetic letter sounds to create readers). So we emphasize the memorization of abstract facts before they have an understanding of what this actually means, and wonder why the kids can't memorize them. Then instead of teaching them landmarks (not sure
if this is the actual term) and how to do derived facts, we expect every single isolated fact to be learned rapidly at once. OK, I'll get off my soap box, sorry...do go to the NCTM website and pick up a copy of Cognitively Guided Instruction as well as the new Principles and Standards document. Great resources to guide your choice of new mathematics materials. Take care. ;-D
