Problem solving works best when teachers support their learners through work with real and authentic problems, guiding their thinking through open ended questioning to allow the students to create their own meaning and strategies. The children need to discover for themselves what these terms mean as the work thru these problems. If you're looking for professional resources to help you with problem solving, the book Cognitively Guided Instruction will help. Also see NCTM's new Principles and Standards book. You can find them both on the NCTM website. Best of luck. ;-D
