feel your frustration
By Carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach fifth grade, and some of my students still don't have instant recall. With all of the math that we do with multiplication (measuring area, volume, fractions, percents, etc.), you'd think they'd be experts. The plain
and simple fact is that the kids are too lazy to learn them. I have children who would rather sit there and take up a lot of time drawing pictures, making slash marks, count on their fingers than learn the basic multiplication facts. I tell them that their work could be done so much faster if they'd only learn their facts. I have even sent home notes to parents and given the speed
tests. Still no luck. I learned my multiplication facts in fourth grade--all of
them--and I would have been embarrassed to have admitted to my teacher that I hadn't known them by fifth grade!!! These kids just have no shame.
