probability ideas

Hi Sue,
I do an activity with frogs and dice. I have a board that I copied from a book called Frog Math.
There are 12 frogs trying to hop across a pond to the other side. Each frog is assigned a number, 1-12. The
teacher rolls 2 dice. Add the numbers together. Whoever has the frog with that number gets to move one space. (Ex. If I had frog #7 and the dice came up 5 and 2 I would get to move).
Whoever gets to the other side first wins. After we have played the game a couple of times we list all the possibilities of rolling the sums 1-12 with 2 standard dice to see which number would be likely
to come up the most often. The kids LOVE
this and it is easy to teach.

I also saw this in one of my math books: I had a red pair of shoes, a blue pair of shoes, and a black pair of shoes in my closet. The lights were out. What combinations of shoes might I grab? Then you have the kids cut shoes out of construction paper and put together all the combinations.

Hope that helps.
