Clip to ScrapBook
We just started our 3-D geometry unit today. Did the 2-D part before break. We did a lot with grids and coordinates for the 2-D. Played "sunken ship" similar to battleship and tic tac toe on the grid giving coordinates
to put the x's and o's. (Those were from the Investigations curriculum.)
In the past we've done scavenger hunts for certain shapes - prisms, cylinders, pyramids, etc. around the school or at home. We played architects and designed and built our own homes (like ginger bread houses, but out of graham crackers). They had to design it on graph paper, find the area and perimeter, build
it, and decorate with candy that had a geometric shape. They really liked that and it helped to relate it to real life.
Using legos, snap blocks or other manipulatives is also a great way to predict, estimate, construct, etc.
