Estimating
By Annie

Clip to ScrapBook
I introduce estimation by handing out base ten rods to each of my students. I have them trace the rod on a piece of paper and use the indentations on the rod to form a number line. The number line will be equally divided.

Ex. 64 = 60 61 62 63 64 65 66 67 68 69 70

I have them bold number 65 because it is the midpoint. Then have them underline or circle number 64 on the number line. Talk about rounding rules. Is number 64 before the midpoint (65)?Yes Is number 64 after the midpoint (65)? No Have them circle 60. Repeat the process until students have enough practice and don't need to make the number line. I hope this helps. Ü
