I have found the "traffic light" works very well with my first/second graders. I made three circles (red, yellow, green). I wrote the color word on the circle and laminated it. When the students are working at an appropriate volume, we stay on "green". If they begin to get too loud, I change (or ask a student closer to the board) to change the color to yellow. (That's strike one..watch out!) If I have to ask them again to quiet down..it's strike 2. If they are still too loud, strike 3, we change the color to red. Red means-- no talking. If they are working on a partner/group activily they really hate to stop and work alone. After a few minutes I change the color back to green or yellow. You can add rewards/consequences for staying on green or talking on red. This has worked great for my centers. Good Luck!
