I agree with Kimberly. You really need to model and teach each center before you let the students have-at-them. If you check out my post on the primary board (scroll down to listening center and then find for JHE-independent centers) you will see how I approach centers. Most of the centers I have require the students to complete some kind of document. The students don't have to complete the document each time. Many times the first week I have them practice freely at the center and then the second week they are required to write the answers they came up with.
